Invitations are one of the few designs people keep. A wedding card, a first birthday invite, a housewarming or a store launch card gets forwarded, screenshotted and sometimes framed. That is also why a slightly off invitation is noticed immediately. Canva makes this work approachable, and once you understand a handful of design rules, your invites stop looking like edited templates and start looking designed.
Start with the Format, Not the Template
Decide first whether the invitation will be printed, shared on WhatsApp, or both, because that single choice controls your size and export settings. A printed card needs a print size with bleed and a PDF export. A digital invite is better as a portrait graphic sized for phone screens, or as a short animated version if you want movement.
- Digital invite for WhatsApp and Instagram: portrait, roughly 1080 by 1350 pixels
- Story or status invite: 1080 by 1920 pixels
- Printed card: choose the exact card size in Canva and keep 3 to 5 mm margin from the edge
- Animated invite: same size as your digital invite, exported as MP4 or GIF
Building the Invitation Step by Step
Open Canva, search for the occasion and size, and pick a template close to the mood you want rather than one you love completely. Templates are starting frames. Replace the sample names, dates and venue text with the real details first, before you touch colours, so you can see how much space your actual content needs.
Set your hierarchy next. On an invitation there are only three levels that matter: the occasion or the names, the date and time, and the venue with any extra notes. Make the first level clearly largest, the second clearly readable, and the third quiet. If everything on the card is bold, nothing is.
Then handle colour and type. Two colours plus one neutral is plenty, and drawing them from the mood of the event, such as warm reds and gold for a wedding or soft pastels for a baby shower, is safer than picking favourites. Pair one decorative or serif font for the headline with one clean font for details, and stop there.
Details That Make It Look Professional
- Align everything to a shared centre line or a shared left edge, never both
- Keep generous empty space around the text block so the card feels calm
- Use Canva elements sparingly as accents, not as a border around everything
- Check that names, dates and spellings are correct at least twice
- Preview on a phone before sending, since that is where it will be read
A good invitation does not decorate information. It makes the information easy to feel.
Exporting and Sharing
For printing, export as PDF Print and confirm the size with your printer before paying for a batch. For digital sharing, PNG keeps text crisp while JPG keeps the file light for WhatsApp forwarding. If you built an animated version, export MP4 for status and stories. Keep the editable Canva file, because the same design will be reused with new dates more often than you expect.
Turning Invitation Design into Paid Work
Invitations are one of the easiest entry points into paid design work in India. Families, small studios, event planners and local businesses need them constantly, and they are happy to pay someone who is quick and reliable. If you want to go beyond one card and learn Canva properly, including AI assisted design, brand identity and content production, Wabbithire runs an affordable Advanced Canva with AI initiative built by Mukul Dhiman, plus a Canva Placement Program that ends in a real paid placement rather than a certificate.
